The once Roman military
village of Vodnjan, at an elevation of of 135 m above sea level
,and according to the 2001 census, with its 3,406 residents ,is
located 11.7km from
Pula .The main
industry of the medieval urban and rural centre is agriculture
and the surrounding area is covered in vineyards and olive groves
with the infamous kazuns sprawling across the rugged landscape.
Vodnjan is famed for its high quality wines and renowned for its
premiere olive oil .The majority of people in Vodnjan with
the long history are descendants from the indigenous population
and many old natives speak the Istrian language called "Bumbari". Over
the years all the Istrian - Roman and Istrian -Venetian dialects
have been passed down from generation to generation and the
bi-lingual residents of Vodnjan offer a multi cultural society with
various national costumes, languages ,songs, folklore and dance
traditions.

The town of Vodnjan over
the centuries has managed to maintain its medieval look and feel .
