The history of Barban dates back to the13 century when Barban was a  fortified  town.

The village is rich in gothic monuments and a Baroque style church as well as 3 other churches and parts of the city walls and city gate can still be seen.

Barbans economy is based on agriculture and stock breeding. However as Tourism has developed over the years Barban has been at the forefront of the development of Agro tourism (everything must be home-grown as well as home bred). Along with the fantastic cuisine that Barban has to offer visitors  to Barban can enjoy walks, cycling and horse riding throughout Barbans natural surroundings.

There are several folk festivals held in the village  of Barban along with an annual equestrian tournament dating back to 1686 called TRKA NA PRSTENAC .
